We started these pages with four strings because we had never seen a comprehensive list anywhere. Nominally RFC 1. 94. New Stuff: It's been a very long time since the last update. Frankly, it seemed pretty pointless just updating the version numbers of chrome and FF and Opera which is what has mostly happened over the last couple of years. Not a lot of innovation was happening. And FF was slowly dying on the vine. Imagine our surprise (and delight) when we had to add 4 new browsers at this update. Most are just UI stuff (OK it's still innovation) on top of Webkit. Then we added brave which intercepts and replaces embedded adverts with its own (they say its better for the publisher and more secure - are they brave (or crazy) or what). Finally, we added Palemoon a number of years ago as a windows only FF optimization. The project seems to have changed significantly and now runs on *nix and windows and has its own rendering engine (Goanna). Maybe there is an alternative to the deadly boring rise of chrome and edge after all. We're going to look some more at this project. Department of useless stuff: Anyone know the difference between Open Mini and Mobile.. One of our smart readers responded with a link to Opera's site which says - roughly - that Opera Mobile is a real browser that can directly access the web - just like regular Opera and is designed for smartphones whereas Opera Mini is a cut- down browser that needs an Opera server and is typically used on feature phones. So there you go. As always thanks to everyone who took the time to supply a string - even if we didn't use it. The end of an era: The last version of Netscape - the browser that started the modern browser business is no more. Netscape is dead - long live Netscape (with appropriate shudders at the memory of NS 4. Getting the Strings for Nefarious Purposes (and in Other Formats)Note: The title is our normal (and puerile) attempt at humor. Plenty of folk want to use the strings for sensible and useful reasons. But that would make a boring title. You are perfectly at liberty to use the strings for any purpose you choose. We regularly get asked for these strings in other formats - mostly without all our pathetic attempts at humor in the explanations. We had studiously avoided doing anything because it smelled, vaguely, of work. Then we got an email from Marc Gray who suggested that we use a simple regular expression and was even kind enough to supply it. Marc provided a php script, which we enclose below (with a minor correction supplied by Dave Thomas) for those to whom it may be a more sensible solution (a formatted list based on this script is available here, credits and their script at the foot of the page). We slapped together a few lines of Javascript (you can't actually code in JS you can only slap things together - doubtless google would disagree) based on his idea so if you light the blue touch paper by clicking the button below, this page will disppear (after about 1. Simply save the resulting page and hack out anything that looks vaguely HTML'ish (the strings are enclosed in < p class="g- c- s"> < /p> tags). It was tested and works with FF (3 and 4), Webkit (Chrome/Safari), Opera 1. IE 9. 0 & even IE 1. IE 8. 0 does not work, which probably means all prior versions don't work either). We are progressively going to add the feature on a browser- by- browser basis for your delight, edification and titillation. To restore the page to its full glory(!) just hit your page refresh button. Note: We removed a bunch of annoying < br /> tags that were lying around inside the browser strings from our old page formatting method. Marc Gray's PHP script (untested by us). Notes: We always send an email to thank you for your contribution - if you don't get one it's 'cos your spam filters are probably putting it in your junk folder (thanks a bundle) or 'cos you gave us a wrong return address 'cos you don't trust us (thanks a bundle). As always - especially if you are feeling a super- sleuth moment coming on - have look at the mystery strings and strings from server logs to add to the total of mankind's knowledge. We discontinued the crawler, spiders and robots section - there is much better coverage at this site which is the home of robots. We used to publish the feature list for mobile things dating from the days when it would probably say something like - 'makes phone calls, 1. Now the spec list just leaves us with a feeling of inferiority (they are smarter than we are) and it takes about 6 hours to get the specs from these horrible 'graphic- overkill' mobile supplier web sites. So we stopped. For browser historians: We thought that Mosaic was the original browser. As usual we were wrong. James Butler took the time to drop us an email - thanks: Before there was NSCA's Mosaic there were several other browsers capable of interpreting HTML, including Erwise and Viola, both of which I used before the Andreeson project issued any software. Although primarily for viewing SGML, both of those browsers did a pretty good job of parsing the very basic HTML commands that Mr. Berners- Lee published as he developed his SGML subset (HTML). For serious study of the topic Johnathan Mc. Cormack sent this link to an arstechnica article on the early web browsers. Fascinating stuff. If your browser string is NOT here please take a moment and click here then mail us the result (if you are using an exotic browser send us the URL of where to get it). We are now crediting the supplier of each string or answer individually as a homage to all those folks who take the time as thousands of you have done over the years. Many thanks for helping ourselves. We have added some info about changing UA strings which unless you have to do it is, we think, a Very Bad Thing™. Mobile Things. This section was started to include the browser strings generated by mobile things which we broadly define as: you don't need to be tarzan to carry it more than 2. Well its just a working definition and we are always open to suggestions. We were going to organize this section by browser - but we have decided to keep telephones separate - go figure. And if you have any better ideas remember - keep 'em to yourself (just joking). Mobile Development Resources. Good morning! Welcome to The Morning Shift, your roundup of the auto news you crave, all in one place every weekday morning. Here are the important stories you need to know. Gear: Make It Easy. It used to be that if you bought a high- end luxury car, you could guarantee that its on- board tech would far outstrip something from a cheaper segment. That gap is closing, as even affordable cars are coming with a variety of options. And while the luxury cars still offer premium features, if they’re too complicated or inconvenient to use, most people just won’t use them. Overall, luxury and non- luxury buyers are equally satisfied with the technology and its ease of use in their new cars, according to a study conducted by J. D. Power. It did find a degree of “lost value,” however; that is, value of certain tech lost on owners because they simply don’t know how to or won’t utilize it fully. From the study: Satisfaction is very low among owners who tried a feature but no longer use it. These owners represent a captive audience who have paid for the feature but, through a poor experience, have decided not to continue using it. The most prominent reason given by owners for not using features is because they do not need them. The highest rate of occurrence among owners who tried, but no longer use a feature is in- vehicle mobile router (1. When these owners—along with those who have never used the feature—were asked why, 4. Both reasons equate to a lack of value for the feature as perceived by owners. The study found that owners were most satisfied with safety tech (blind- spot detection, back- up cameras) and basic features (HVAC, seats, phone) and were happiest when dealers helped them understand everything the car could do. And you know what? All of these things are pretty standard across all automotive price segments. So maybe next time you start thinking about a car that comes with all kinds of fancy onboard tech, also ask yourself how often you’re actually going to use it. How often are you really going to use those massaging seats or that ridiculous semi- autonomous cruise control? No sense in paying for something you won’t use. Gear: The ‘Sporty’ Toyota Hybrids Are Coming. Not that long ago, if you drove a Toyota Prius, everyone assumed that you were a hippie. You didn’t care about going fast, you just cared about the planet. Laaaaame. Not anymore! The Frankfurt Auto Show is in full swing and Toyota just announced that it will add a line of sporty hybrids. Buyers can choose between those or the traditional, fuel- saving hybrid cars, according to Automotive News Europe. From the story: “One will provide the traditional benefits of efficiency and fuel economy, like in the current offer. The second will build on this, adding more power and a more dynamic driving character,” Toyota Europe boss Johan van Zyl said at the auto show here. Toyota will reveal more details about its high- performance hybrids “early next year,” van Zyl said. The decision to add the sportier variants was triggered by customer feedback, he said. Did you hear that? This was because of us! Us nerds who saw the benefit of a hybrid system but wanted something fun. We did it! Our first look at what Toyota means by a sporty hybrid is the C- HR Hy- Power design study that was unveiled at the show. Will the sport hybrid actually be a decent performer? Will it be priced competitively with its regular sports car competitors? What will Toyota do to address the weight issue? All of these are questions we hope Toyota will answer when it reveals more details about the new line “early next year.”Now we wait. Gear: Love Thy Neighbor. You could call the relations between North Korea and its neighboring countries tense. Recently, South Korea deployed the Terminal High- Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in order to keep an eye on and potentially protect itself against its unpredictable northern neighbor. The move really ruffled China’s feathers, which is concerned that the radar aspect of the system could provide surveillance capabilities against it. Chinese officials have long protested the U. S. deployment of the Terminal High- Altitude Area…Read more Anyway, China’s response to the political tension has been to largely cut ties with Korean businesses. Tour groups no longer visit South Korea. And on the home front, people are boycotting Korea stores and brands. Including Hyundai. Hyundai’s sales are plummeting despite China’s overall increase in vehicle sales last month, and dealerships are suffering, according to Bloomberg. Dealers in China say they’re losing thousands of yuan on every Hyundai sale because of steep discounts, and some may drop the brand. Beijing Hyundai, the joint venture with Beijing- based BAIC, lost 2. In the same period a year earlier, the joint venture earned 7. Beijing Hyundai sold only 3. Thaad missile system was installed in South Korea. Revenue fell 5. 2 percent to 4. Falling sales aren’t limited to China either. Hyundai sales also fell 2. August. But the U. S. isn’t the biggest car market anymore. China is. And when China stops buying your cars, you have a problem. Gear: Samsung’s Got A Shiny New Battery. One of the biggest problems plaguing electric cars is range anxiety. Whether or not it’s completely placebo, some people see an electric car with a slightly lower range that they’re comfortable with and that’s the deal- breaker for them. Samsung might have a solution for this. At the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Korean tech company’s battery arm, Samsung SDI, unveiled various battery products, including a system with a claimed longer range. From the release: “Multifunctional battery pack” of Samsung SDI attracted the most attention. Its users can change the number of modules as they want as if they place books on a shelf. For example, if 2. If 1. 0 to 1. 2 modules are mounted on a regular sedan, it can run up to 3. This pack is expected to catch the eyes of automakers, because they can design a car whose mileage may vary depending on how many modules of a single pack are installed. Whether or not these batteries will get picked up by a major automaker remains to be seen. Gear: Nobody’s Buying Cars In Florida, Yet. As people are start to recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, one thing’s become clear: nobody is buying cars right now. Car dealerships in Florida managed to largely avoid destructive damage and are reopening for business, reports Automotive News. But buying a car seems to be the last thing on anyone’s mind at the moment. From the story: “There’s no business right now,” said Bernie Moreno, who owns the Infiniti of Coral Gables store, about five miles south of Miami. There’s zero.”That’s partly because some six million people evacuated the area, he said. He also noted, “You just went through a hurricane and you’re getting your house in order. You’re not thinking, ‘Let’s go get my oil changed or buy a new car.’ It’s going to be at least until next week until we see that happen.”Other dealerships reported that they didn’t lose any cars and that the supply will be crucial in replacing destroyed cars in Houston because of Harvey. This is hopeful news, as it means that once people get back into cars, they can also start heading towards normalcy. Reverse: You Get A Car! And You Get A Car!
